Second ‘Interceptor’ deployed in Klang River

In 2013, at the age of 19, Boyan Slat founded the non-profit entity The Ocean Cleanup. Mission: develop advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. It raised US$2.2 million through a crowd funding campaign.

Remember Boyan Slat? The founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup has developed the first scalable solution to efficiently intercept plastic in rivers before it reaches the oceans. By placing so-called ‘Interceptors’ in strategic locations in rivers around the world, his company aims to halt 80% of plastic from entering the oceans in just five years time. This organisation has now come to Klang River in Malaysia for a river clearing mission, and he has made it clear yesterday that they are NOT clearing wastes for free. How long will it be here while our locals are still ignorant on plastic consumption and littering?

The Ocean Cleanup develops technology to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. To do so, we need to not only clean up the plastic that is currently in the oceans, but also stop new plastic from entering them. In order to clean the world’s most polluting rivers, The Ocean Cleanup builds these Interceptors.
